Brain training, in plain English
The words you will hear at NeuroHaven, defined simply. No jargon, no gatekeeping.
The basics
Brain training
Guiding the brain to hold healthier, more efficient patterns of activity. At NeuroHaven this means qEEG mapping plus neurofeedback, done as a personalized program rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol.
qEEG (quantitative EEG)
A brain map. A non-invasive, roughly 90-minute scan that records your brain's electrical activity across 21 points and compares your patterns to typical ranges, so training can be personalized to you.
Brain map
The plain-English name for a qEEG. A picture of how your brain is firing today, the baseline your training is built on.
Neurofeedback
Training your brain gets from real-time feedback. Sensors read your brainwaves, and when your activity moves toward a healthier pattern, the feedback rewards it, so your brain repeats it. Drug-free and non-invasive.
Baseline
Your starting point, captured by the brain map. Progress is measured against it, and a re-scan later shows what changed.
Protocol
The specific pattern a session trains, chosen from your brain map. Your protocols are selected and adjusted for you, not applied from a template.
Non-invasive
Nothing enters your body or brain. The sensors only read your brain's own activity, like a stethoscope reads a heartbeat.
Your five brainwaves (plus SMR)
Delta (0.5 to 4 Hz)
The slowest brainwaves, dominant in deep, dreamless sleep and physical repair.
Theta (4 to 8 Hz)
Slow waves tied to drowsiness, daydreaming, and deep relaxation. Helpful in the right amount, distracting in excess while you are trying to focus.
Alpha (8 to 12 Hz)
The calm, present state, relaxed but alert. The rhythm meditators cultivate and a common target for a quieter, steadier mind.
Beta (12 to 30 Hz)
Active, engaged thinking and focus. Useful for getting things done, and stressful when it runs too high for too long.
Gamma (above 30 Hz)
The fastest waves, linked to peak concentration and moments of insight when different parts of the brain work in sync.
SMR (sensorimotor rhythm)
A specific band around 12 to 15 Hz linked to a calm, focused body and, in research, to better sleep. A frequent neurofeedback target.
Measuring the change
Re-scan
A second brain map after a stretch of training, so you can see the shift in your own data rather than only sensing it.
See it on your own brain.

NeuroHaven is a brain-training practice in Miami, not a medical clinic. Neurofeedback is a training method, not a treatment for any condition, and nothing here is medical advice.
